What a team needs from motion changes as the company grows. This is the map, stage by stage: what's required, what to build and who to build it with.

Thesis

A brand's motion is a business asset, and a core part of a brand's identity. Audiences tend to meet the brand in its marketing first, and that marketing is often in motion: the feed, the launch film, the ad, the product. Motion is how the brand behaves, and behaviour is what people recognise, remember and trust.

Motion systems and principles distil the brand's values into behaviour. How a brand moves carries how it thinks: confident or playful, precise or warm. Felt consistently, that behaviour becomes connection. The audience recognises the brand the way they recognise a person.

Handled as a system, that behaviour compounds. Every piece of work reinforces the same identity, recognition builds, and the brand becomes more distinctive as it grows. Consistent behaviour across every surface is what turns media spend into brand equity rather than one-off impressions.

The system is also where the operational value sits. Decided once and carried everywhere, motion consistency is built in rather than policed. Headcount grows with scale as demand increases, and smart systems let the team do more with less. New surfaces and markets open without reinvention. Senior people spend their time on the work that moves the brand.

That is why motion is a core brand function, built with design from the start. Design defines what the brand is. Motion defines how it behaves. Together they give the audience one coherent brand everywhere it appears, and give the business a system it can scale on.

How I work

Building the system

Motion systems are what keep a brand consistent as it scales. As a brand grows, with more people making the work and more surfaces to cover, motion is where a system earns its keep, holding the brand together while the volume goes up. I build the systems and infrastructure that make that possible: a scalable, on-brand language for how the brand moves, so it stays consistent wherever it appears and gives its audience a reason to believe.

In practice that means embedded in the teams doing the work. On the brand side, alongside the Head of Design, leading the motion team and holding the craft bar while making sure the work delivers against what the team is actually being measured on. On the product side, keeping product motion and brand motion in conversation with each other as both evolve.

The role sits at Director level, cross-functional and leadership facing: keeping core stakeholders in touch with how the brand is developing, and keeping that development aligned to the company's core business goals.

Brand and product motion can be one system with two surfaces. I help teams build it that way.

Building the tooling

A brand system works when the people making the work can reach it, where they are already working, at the moment they need it. Getting there is an infrastructure problem, and building that infrastructure is what I do.

At Skyscanner we built a smart motion system that cut production time on motion design assets by 70%. Same team, same craft bar, a fraction of the hours. That is the shape of the opportunity: AI absorbing the repeatable work, templating, variants, localisation, first passes, with the traditional pipeline carrying everything that depends on craft and judgement.

For a brand marketing organisation the return is structural rather than incremental. Smart systems let the team do more with less, so capacity scales ahead of headcount. Localisation keeps pace with the launch calendar instead of trailing it. Brand consistency holds by design rather than by enforcement. Senior people spend their time on the work that moves the brand.

I have also shipped two motion platforms end to end, Plays and Surface, which means I can take an internal platform from business case through to working product. I can spec it properly with engineering, make the investment case to leadership, or build the first version myself and prove the value before anyone commits a roadmap slot to it.
